The world has been facing a significant STEM skills shortage for years now, which is only growing as a result of the pandemic. Therefore, we must do whatever we can to develop and diversify the STEM talent pipeline. That’s why our foundation has partnered with Generating Genius to fund five university scholarship students in the UK – who are all studying in STEM-related fields.
The charity supports students from underserved communities to help make sure they’re in a position to excel in STEM jobs in a diverse and inclusive workforce. Together we’ve helped the students to undertake computer science and engineering courses at universities in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
We recently heard from the students about how beneficial the scholarships have been during the health crisis – a year in which their academic lives have been severely disrupted.
Our funding has helped the scholars to buy lab equipment to conduct experiments at home, tech equipment to work remotely and purchase crucial reading materials for their courses.
It’s also helped to broaden horizons and career prospects outside of university. With our support, the students have attended networking events and honed their skills through extra external courses.
In addition to this, SThree has also invited the scholars to recruitment workshops to help them with CVs and interview techniques. And ahead of their graduations later this year, our team are running a virtual event to help these students stand out from the crowd, as they embark on careers in STEM.
